When NASCAR Productions called for a camera crew in San Diego, I knew we were in for something special — but nothing could have prepared me for spending the day watching NASCAR driver Parker Kligerman tackle military training exercises on Naval Base Coronado.

As a camera operator for Assignment Desk's San Diego video production team, I've covered everything from corporate interviews to live events, but this NASCAR project was unlike anything in my portfolio. Producer Mason Seay had coordinated something extraordinary: documenting Kligerman's experience with real Navy training scenarios ahead of the upcoming race on the naval base in Coronado, California.

My fellow camera operator Will Pupa and I arrived at 7:30 AM armed with dual Sony FX9 cameras — the perfect choice for this dynamic shoot. The FX9's exceptional low-light performance and fast autofocus would prove crucial as we moved between indoor training facilities and bright California sunshine. We knew we'd need the reliability and image quality these cameras deliver when following an athlete through unpredictable military training environments.

The day unfolded like an action movie. First, we captured Kligerman learning aircraft firefighting techniques, the intensity palpable as he worked to extinguish flames on a training aircraft. The FX9's full-frame sensor captured every bead of sweat and moment of concentration. Next came the flooding ship hull simulation — a claustrophobic environment where our cameras' stabilization became essential as we documented his escape training. But perhaps the most visually striking moment was watching this NASCAR driver change tires on an F-18 fighter jet, his racing pit crew skills translating surprisingly well to military aircraft maintenance.

What made this San Diego video production truly successful was the seamless collaboration between our camera crew and NASCAR Productions. Will and I moved as a coordinated unit, ensuring we captured multiple angles of each training exercise without interfering with the military instructors or compromising Kligerman's safety. The 10+ hour shoot day demanded stamina and adaptability — core qualities that Assignment Desk's camera operators bring to every project, whether it's corporate video production or unique content like this NASCAR documentary.

After wrapping at 6:15 PM, with 280 miles of travel time factored in, we delivered footage that perfectly captured the crossover between NASCAR's high-speed world and military precision training. The content showcased not just Kligerman's athleticism, but the unexpected connections between racing and military service — perfect promotional material for NASCAR's upcoming Coronado race.

This shoot exemplified why Assignment Desk remains San Diego's go-to video production company for challenging, creative projects. Whether it's following a NASCAR driver through Navy SEAL-style training or capturing your next corporate video, our experienced camera crews deliver the technical expertise and storytelling vision that transforms ordinary footage into compelling content. Some days you're shooting boardroom presentations; other days you're documenting tire changes on fighter jets — and that's exactly why I love this business.
